The ESR II (Empire Studio Reference) reasserts itself as the king of neutrality at Empire Ears, but at no point is the presentation of this five-driver electrostatic hybrid sterile. A beautiful 'Brushed Silver' faceplate gives hint to its polished finesse.

Built in the same configuration as the original, Valkyrie II does offer substantial improvements bringing refinement compared to its predecessor's edge. Deep space illumination increases for a holographic soundstage, with its single electrostatic tweeter sitting further back in the mix.

Similarly clad in a 'Dragonhide' faceplate, it's an exercise in intimacy, focus and bass-forward intensity. The Advance and Inspire cables from Nobunaga Labs add a further touch of emphasis to the mid-range, as an immediately audible upgrade. Cayin Audio's Class A N6II/E01 similarly propels vocals along, as the DAP of choice to drive Valkyrie II's 3ohm load.

The results are stunning, and obvious – every part of Valkyrie II's frequency response appears in balance, to make this mythical Norse character stand out amongst its competition.
